Hindu in Bali

Hindu as the main religion of people in Bali, take a unique form as a blend of Indian Hindu, local Balineses tradition, culture, art, Java culture (most Balinese people was the Hindu follower run from Java island in 15th century to avoid converted to Islam as the Hindu kingdom was defeated by Islam Kingdom).
This make Bali also known as the island of God, where thousand of temples are build across the small island of Bali.

Hindu Temple usually called PURA in Bali has its own follower based on the scope of the temple, it is beginning from family temples, community (called "banjar") temple, local city temple, and so on. 

Building temple for Balinese is as an implementation of Bhakti Yoga, a form of Yoga where we Hindu do worshiping Brahman as form of manifestation. 

Bali island is surrounded by many major temple based on the God worshiped:
  • in the hearth of Bali island, we have Besakih Temple, the biggest temple in Indonesia, mainly for worshiping Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and as the center of all Balinese sects with its own community temple surrounding the main temple.
  • in the north we have Pura Batur (located in mount Batur), for worshiping Dewa Vishnu 
  • in the east we have Pura Lempuyang (located in mount Lempuyan in the east of the island), for worshiping Dewa Iswara 
  • in the south we have Pura Andakasa for worshiping Dewa Brahma
  • in the west we have Pura Batukaru for worshiping Dewa Mahadewa
  • in north east we have Pura Besakih for worshiping Dewa Sambhu
  • in south east we have Pura Goa Lawah (Bat Cave Temple) for worshiping Dewa Maheswara
  • in the south west we have Pura Uluwatu, for worshiping Dewa Rudra (Shiva)
  • in the north west we have Pura Puncak Mangu, for worshiping Dewa Sangkara
  • Gods mentioned above are called Nawa Dewata, the nine manifestation of Brahman
